Dr. Augustine Dery, a proud alumnus of St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary Secondary School, Wa, has been honored as the Most Outstanding Optometrist at the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Optometric Association.
In addition to this national honor, he was also celebrated as the Best Optometrist for the Greater Accra Zone.
Born to parents from Nandom in the Upper West Region, Dr. Dery spent his early years between Bolgatanga and Accra, where he completed his basic education. He later attended St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary in Wa, a decision he attributes to his mother’s guidance. At Xavier, he distinguished himself not only academically but also as an athlete, choir director, school organist, president of various clubs, member of the National Math and Science Quiz team, and Head Boy.
Dr. Dery’s journey into optometry was sparked by a Xavier homecoming event, where he met alumni Supt. Dr. Remi Ninkpe and Lt Cdr Dr. Peter-Damian Nyuur, both studying Optometry at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Inspired, he followed in their footsteps, eventually earning his Doctor of Optometry and Visual Sciences degree from KNUST. A dedicated Christian, Dr. Dery holds that all achievements start and end with God, a principle that guides his life and career.
Message to the Youth:
“Optometry is a noble profession with great potential to improve lives. I encourage young people to explore careers in health and science, as these fields offer incredible opportunities for growth and community impact. My time at St. Francis Xavier taught me that dedication, integrity, and faith are invaluable. Whatever path you choose, stay focused, seek knowledge, and never underestimate the power of education.”
Dr. Dery’s journey, marked by hard work, faith, and a commitment to excellence, is a testament to the positive impact of a Xavier education and to the power of personal and professional vision.
