The Country Director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Ghana, Dr. Dirk Aßmann, together with a delegation from GIZ, has paid a courtesy call on the Nandom Traditional Council as part of efforts to understand the current development and security landscape in the Upper West Region.

The team was received on behalf of the Nandom Naa, Naa (Prof.) Edmund Nminnyem Delle Chiir VIII, by his Regent and other traditional leaders. The Ko Naa formally welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for their visit.

The engagement marks the first step in GIZ’s broader initiative to assess challenges and opportunities in the region, which will inform future interventions. The focus areas include agriculture, local development, manufacturing, security, and peacebuilding.

In his remarks, the Nandom Maalu Naa, Dr. Sangu Delle, welcomed the GIZ team and outlined key investment areas such as agriculture, education, health, women’s empowerment, and security. He encouraged GIZ to collaborate with state institutions, local organizations, and the Nandom Traditional Council to develop a sustainable program that benefits community members. He further suggested that incentives be tied to projects to ensure long-term impact.

Dr. Delle also stressed the need to move beyond just agricultural production and focus on value addition to maximize economic benefits. He cited the abundance of shea fruits in Nandom and surrounding towns, emphasizing the potential for processing them into high-value products. He noted that by investing in shea processing, the community could create employment opportunities, boost local incomes, and strengthen the agricultural value chain.

Dr. Aßmann reiterated GIZ’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in the region. He emphasized that this visit was crucial in gaining insights into local challenges and potentials, helping the German government and GIZ integrate different approaches for effective interventions.

The visit signals a strengthened partnership between GIZ and local stakeholders, with a shared vision of fostering development and improving livelihoods in the Upper West Region.
