A devastating rainstorm that hit the Nandom Municipality on Sunday and Monday, April 14 and 15 respectively, has left a trail of destruction across four communities — Kusele, Gengenkpe, Piiri, and Tuopare — with properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis destroyed.

At Gengenkpe, the storm, accompanied by severe thunder and lightning, tragically claimed the life of a 12-year-old Basic 7 student of the Gengenkpe Junior High School. The school’s roofing was completely ripped off, leading to the destruction of about 20 laptops and several other learning materials. The Assistant Headmaster of the school, Mr. Donatus Kone, appealed to stakeholders and benevolent institutions to come to the aid of the school, which currently has an enrollment of 112 pupils.

In addition to the school, the Gengenkpe Clinic also suffered structural damages, while a newly constructed clinic in the area was destroyed by the storm.

The electrical infrastructure in the area was not spared, as over 50 electricity poles were brought down in Kusele, Gengenkpe, and Piiri, plunging the communities into darkness and disrupting communication and access to services.

In response to the disaster, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Nominee for Nandom, Hon. Anthony Ziniel, together with the Coordinating Director, the Health Directorate, and the Municipal NADMO Director, toured the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage.

Hon. Ziniel expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and pledged to work within his means and collaborate with relevant institutions and development partners to bring relief to the affected communities.

The residents of the impacted areas are calling on the government, NGOs, and philanthropists to support their recovery and restore essential services in the wake of the destruction.
