The Wa central constituency parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party, NPP, Hajia Humu Awudu on Monday, 9th September, 2024 filed her parliamentary candidature forms at the Wa municipal office of the Electoral Commission.
The much-anticipated event was heralded by hundreds of party supporters massing up at the party constituency office to usher Hajia Humu Awudu to the office of the EC. The atmosphere was a charged one with many chatting her accolades including yelsungmaana which means (action-oriented) and tomadaana to wit provider of jobs.
After scrutinizing the forms presented by the NPP parliamentary candidate and her team, the Wa municipal Returning Officer for the EC, Dr. Joseph Wulifan stated that all requirements had fully been met and wished her well.
In her address after the brief ceremony, the 2024 parliamentary candidate of the NPP expressed her satisfaction with the process. ‘ There have not been any hitches that would raise an alarm. We’ve gone through the registration, exhibition and whatsoever. The EC did a good job, there was no fight between the NDC and the NPP’. Hajia Humu expressed optimism that the elections in the constituency will be peaceful.
Hajia Humu Awudu who is contesting the seat for the second time touted her unprecedented development record. ‘ There’s no single community in this community I’ve not touched a life. She mentioned how she has provided potable water as well as educational and employment opportunities to the youth across the constituency.
Yelsungmaana, didn’t mince words when she noted that, the long stay of Dr. Rashid Pelpuo hasn’t brought the requisite development hence, ought to be truncated on the 7th of December. ‘We all grew up hearing the name Rashid Pelpuo, today we are pleading with him to give the youth a chance to lead’. She said.
Hajia Humu Awudu came into the political limelight in the Wa central constituency when she first contested the 2019 NPP primaries and won. She mounted a spirited challenge for the seat against the incumbent MP Dr. Rashid Pelpuo but failed to annex the seat in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Currently, there are fears of huge cracks within the NPP in the constituency. However, during the filing of the nomination forms, members of the party who are closely aligned with her contender during the primaries Hon. Issahaku Tahiru Moomen were very visible.
Her main contender for the seat, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo of the NDC who is seeking to represent the Wa central constituency for the sixth time is expected to file his nomination forms tomorrow.
