The Nandom District Magistrate Court presided over by Baba Iddrisu has ordered the Electoral Commission of Nandom headed by Isaac Darko to delete the names of 199 from the voters register of the Nandom Constituency register.
Speaking to UpperWestNews, com, the lawyer of the complainants, Iddrisu Munjamilu explained that his clients who are residents of the Nandom Constituency discovered the names of non-residents and non-Ghanaians in the constituency voters’ roll.
The case was therefore brought to the Nandom District Magistrate Court for redress.
The court went through the procedure to get the names deleted from the voter register.
Lawyer Iddrisu explained, “Those persons were not able to be traced and their contacts were not going through and based on this, the District Magistrate Court granted the wish of the complainants and names of 199 persons who illegally found their names on the electoral register of the Nandom Constituency.”
“I commend the complainants of the Nandom Constituency for taking the bold decision to get a clean register for a credible election. We commend the District Magistrate Judge for upholding the laws of Ghana. Today is a victory day for Ghana and Ghanaians”.
Bagr Francis, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) commended members of the NDC for policing the EC during the voter registration and the just-ended voter register exhibition.
“We have followed through due legal processes to get names of persons who are on the voters register expunged. We are a very responsible political party and we want the EC should do a good job but in doing that we cannot allow the EC to be on its own. We will need to support the EC and criticize them when the need be.”
He explained that the NDC worked with the EC to achieve what is good for the people of Nandom and Ghana at large.
Mr Francis added that the country’s democracy just got strengthened by what has happened in the court.
“The court upheld the rule of law by making sure that those illegal, non-Ghanaians mostly from Burkina Faso who found their names on the voter’s registers by conniving with our opponents.
For us, this is a victory for democracy. It is a victory for the National Democratic Congress and victory for the NDC team that worked to make sure this sweet victory is chalked at the Magistrate Court.”
